The pether3 interface is the default SMTP interface. It must be configured with an IP address and network mask so the Email Security — Server appliance can process emails.
The Email Security — Server appliance can process emails in the following analysis modes:
Block mode, to extract emails from the upstream MTA or anti-spam gateway, to forward emails to their intended recipients, and to send "block ," "admin," and "bcc" notices.
Monitor mode, to extract emails from the upstream MTA or anti-spam gateway, to forward emails to their intended recipients, and to send "admin" and "bcc" notices.
Drop mode, to extract emails from the upstream MTA or anti-spam gateway, and to send "admin" and "bcc" notices.
Caution
In Tap/Span mode, the Email Security — Server appliance listens passively on a network switch for email traffic, and does not receive or send emails. In this mode, the pether3 interface is not configured as an SMTP interface, but is instead automatically configured as a loopback interface. Do not attempt to change the pether3 interface settings for Tap/Span analysis mode.
Note
If "admin" and "bcc" notices are configured for Tap/Span mode, the notices are sent from the management (ether1) interface, not the pether3 interface.
Operator or Admin access
IPv6 only: Enable IPv6 on the Email Security — Server appliance and on the SMTP interface. See Enabling IPv6 .
