Information needed to manage user accounts

Prev Next

You need the following information to manage user accounts:

User name—The user name identifies each user accessing the appliance or appliances. Each user name must be unique to the network. By default, the user name has the following characteristics:

  • Must be 1 to 16 characters in length

  • Is case-sensitive

  • May only use letters, numbers, and underscores

Role—Each user is given a role, and this role determines the abilities of the user. For example, only users with an admin role can add and remove users to the system by default. For more information on roles, see Roles for local user accounts.

Password—The password is the secret information, known only to the user, that is used to authenticate the user on the system. By default, passwords must be 8 to 32 characters in length. You can configure rules for stricter password security. For details, see Managing user password validation policies and About password change policies. Users have the ability to change their own passwords. For more information, see Managing your own account.

Account Status—The account status specifies whether the user is currently authorized to log in to the system and for how long. For more information on Account Status, see Managing account status.
